What is obsession? Simple:
ob·ses·sion [uh b-sesh-uh n]
the domination of one’s thoughts or feelings by a persistent idea, image, desire, etc.
the idea, image, desire, feeling, etc., itself.
the state of being obsessed.
the act of obsessing.
“… The domination of one’s thoughts or feelings. ..”
I guess you can say that about most Michael Jackson fans. We are obsessed with someone that the majority of us have never gotten the pleasure to meet. I think about him constantly, talk about him, watch his music videos, defend him, and listen to his music daily. It’s not a crazy kind of obsession, simply something that brings me joy. I am sure other fans can relate to what I’m trying to say. So why is it viewed as unhealthy or strange to be a fan of Michael Jackson? He seems to be some kind of subject that either people have respect or contempt for. Some of us are made fun of for liking him, so we hide our interests to avoid being talked about. Some view fans as nonsensical lunatics who worship a celebrity, however that is the furthest thing from the truth.I can only speak for myself when saying that I love Michael Jackson regardless of his faults. He was human. He did stupid things and made mistakes just like the rest of us. The definition of love is accepting someone for who they are and not putting them on a pedestal, because as soon as you do that and they mess up in your eyes, the illusion is broken. Don’t let there be an illusion of perfection in the first place. No one is perfect, not even Michael Jackson.
Why is obsession associated with idolization and worship when it comes to MJ fans? Well, let’s look at the definition of this word first:
—verb (used with object), i·dol·ized, i·dol·iz·ing.
to regard with blind adoration, devotion, etc.
to worship as a god.
“…blind adoration…to worship as a god…”
This statement cannot be any more false (well, at least, for me it isn’t) Firstly because I do not worship anyone, and I most certainly do not follow him blindly. For instance, haters who like to bring up his accusations from 1993 and 2005 like to try and dismiss fans who have actual evidence and facts of his innocence and victimization. They like to use the term “celebrity worship” to dismiss our facts, however mjfam are one of the most intellectual fanbases I’ve ever experienced. We research, we disprove and defend Michael because he is not here anymore to defend himself, and because he is innocent. Also, it is very important to know the truth, not just the truth behind these false allegations, but the truth behind how the media works. There is no conspiracy ‘theory’-it’s very real. The media have the power to make anyone- even someone as vulnerable and innocent as MJ-look like a monster. His story is one of many examples of how the media can take rumors so far that they could ruin your life and stain your name regardless if you are innocent or not. Fans would not blindly support someone who was supposedly a pedophile. I definitely would not. Blind adoration is when you ignore someone’s wrongdoings and think that someone you look up to can do no wrong.
Love is when you see someone’s faults, accept them, and make them own up to whatever things they did wrong. As I’ve previously stated, if Mj was guilty or had ANY indication of unsavory behavior, I would not defend him at all. I would be kind of sad, but it’s true. I simply could not support someone like that.
a profoundly tender, passionate affection for another person.
a feeling of warm personal attachment or deep affection, as for a parent, child, or friend.
sexual passion or desire.
a person toward whom love is felt; beloved person; sweetheart.
“…a feeling of warm personal attachment or deep affection…a beloved person.”
I know it’s confusing; how can you feel that way for someone you have never met? It’s through inspiration. First you have to understand: he was goofy, sweet, kind and joyous. Not to mention he shared the things he cared about with the world. He genuinely cared for others and gave from the heart. He is an outstanding role model. How can you not love someone like that? I don’t see anyone coming at fans of the great Whitney Houston (I love and miss her too by the way) for them loving her so much. Why is it different with Michael?
DEVOTION: When someone is put on trial, having character witnesses help with the defense’s case in convincing the jury that said defendant is a good person, however facts and evidence must be presented first to prove that this person did not do anything criminal. I was already certain that Michael was a good person, but I had to be absolutely sure of facts concerning the allegations. It’s not that only I found them to be untrue, but they were proven to be untrue in a court of law. I’ve been through every transcript and read every piece of imformation, from BOTH sides in order to come to a conclusion.
[dih-voh-shuhn] Show IPA
profound dedication; consecration.
earnest attachment to a cause, person, etc.
an assignment or appropriation to any purpose, cause, etc.: the devotion of one’s wealth and time to scientific advancement.
Often, devotions. Ecclesiastical . religious observance or worship; a form of prayer or worship for special use.
Conclusion: so am I obsessed? Definitely. Do I idolize? Absolutely not. Am I a rabid, incoherent fanatic? No. I am simply an admirer of a wonderful person that walked this earth and spread a message of love, and who only asked to be loved.
